Hero-Background

Kelly Hungerford is Director of Digital Transformation Strategy & Services.

She is based in Switzerland and joined Sunstar in 2020.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

My parents were always supportive of dreaming big, so depending on the year and my age, I remember wanting to be a spy, a professional athlete, an astronaut, a race car driver, and an architect. I would say my job today most closely models architecture, so somehow, I managed to live part of the dream.

How would your friends describe you?

A “Glass half full,” type of person. It takes a lot for me to lose hope in a situation or see the negative side of a situation. This is an advantage but also a bit of a curse because sometimes I say yes to something before I have had time to think it through. The upside to that is that I have been fortunate to participate in amazing experiences and projects in life – I just go for it!

What are your hobbies?

I really enjoy the outdoors and socializing so my hobbies most usually involve family or friends a group activity. I love to unwind by cooking or baking and I must admit, technology is not just a career path – I absolutely adore to tinker with tech on weekends and evenings. My mom recently moved to Switzerland so I am learning to knit so we can have a hobby together.

 What’s your favorite family tradition?

We are big on family dinners, so there is rarely a night where we don’t sit down together at the table. We also have a “girls’ holiday” tradition at our house with my daughters, where we spend a week together skiing. They are amazing young women, and it is really cool to spend time with them making memories. I think I appreciate the time with them even more now that they are entering college. I hope this tradition remains even after they leave home.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I can hardly claim this as my accomplishment alone, but I would say convincing my Mom to leave California (at 84 years old) and come and live with our family in Switzerland is at the top of the list.

What was your first job?

I had a paper route when I was twelve. It only lasted 3 days. I broke a window throwing the newspaper and was asked not to come back. J

What is your favorite thing about your career?

My team. I love working with people, mentoring and sharing any experiences I can to help teammates grow and succeed. It brings immense pleasure to see colleagues thrive! After that, I would say that I really appreciated that my learning never stops. It is impossible to master the craft of a technologist or a leader because people, environments, and technologies… are always changing. I find this fascinating, challenging, and really exciting all at the same time. I also love that technology centers around people and I love working with people, so my career as a technologist is perfect for me.
