The Sunstar Foundation and Sunstar present the 4th World Dental Hygienist Awards at the ISDH 2016

The International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (ISDH), organized by the Swiss Dental Hygienists in cooperation with the International Federation of Dental Hygiene (IFDH) took place from June 23rd to June 25th 2016 in Basel, Switzerland. Here, during the 4th World Dental Hygienist Awards ceremony, the Sunstar Foundation together with Sunstar recognized three outstanding dental hygienists who have made significant contributions to the dental and dental hygiene communities and their profession.
Basel, Switzerland (June 25, 2016) – The International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (ISDH) gathered approximately 1600 dental hygienists and covered areas like nutrition and oral health, caries prevention, diagnosis, and numerous new challenges to motivate patients. The Sunstar Foundation and Sunstar were proud Matterhorn sponsors of this event, showing total support of the dental hygiene profession which is significantly helping society improve people’s quality of life everywhere.
On June 23rd, during the Opening Ceremony, JoAnn Gurenlian, President of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists, thanked the Director of the Sunstar Foundation Ms. Mayumi Kaneda with an Award for its continuous support to the dental hygienist community with the Sunstar World Dental Hygienist Award.
On this same day, Sunstar GUM® held a workshop titled: ‘’The art of interdental cleaning’’. This session run by Ms. Catherine Waldron RDH aimed to share and provide tips and tricks on interdental aids and shed the light on the many tools that are available. The event was followed by a cocktail to facilitate idea exchange and networking.
On June 24th, the ISDH opened with the Sunstar Awards presentation. Ms. Mayumi Kaneda, Director of the Sunstar Foundation, and Dr. Marzia Massignani, Scientific Affairs Manager, explained how Sunstar has engaged in oral and systemic health education since the 1980s. As Dr. Massignani further explained, Sunstar has also been partnering with the Joslin Diabetes Center, the world’s largest diabetes research and clinical care organization dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of diabetes, to communicate the strong link between oral health and diabetes. Among other topics presented, the new chapter of the Quintessence Cell-to-Cell Communication series titled “Oral Health and General Health – The Links Between Periodontitis, Atherosclerosis, and Diabetes” was introduced. Sunstar has released the video in seven languages along with a patient-friendly version.
After this, the winners of the 4th Sunstar World Dental Hygienist Awards were announced by Dr. Gurenlian.

Each Awardee presented her project to the audience which was followed by a Question & Answer session. Ms. Mayumi Kaneda and Dr. Gurenlian presented these Awards to the 3 recipients in front of 650 dental hygienists.
During the closing ceremony on June 25th, the Sunstar Foundation and Sunstar were extensively recognized in the closing remarks.
The 5th Sunstar World Dental Hygienist Award will be celebrated in 2019 in South Korea, at the 21st International Symposium of Dental Hygiene. Come join us!
